Kids find a new way to adjust: Chiropractors

Did you know that nearly 3% of children in the USA were adjusted by a Chiropractor 2007? Thus, Chiropractic making it the second-most common form of complementary or alternative medicine for children, a government report said recently. (Most common: natural products, such as fish oil and herbs).

Melanie Booth never expected to take her baby to a chiropractor. But when son Mac was 3 months old and having problems - difficulty with nursing, apparent discomfort when lying on his tummy and a tendency to turn his head only one way - his pediatrician recommended she do just that. After one visit, she was a believer, too: As chiropractor Elise Hewitt worked on Mac, "he began to quiver and shake, and it kind of scared my husband and me," Booth says. "But she explained (she) was releasing energy that was stored up incorrectly in his body and particularly his spine. … And almost immediately, we saw a change in his ability to move his neck." The nursing and tummy time problems cleared up, too, Booth says, as Mac continued treatments over several months.

Back Pack Tips

Now that school is back, it's vital to ensure that your child is wearing their backpack properly to avoid spinal damage.

Here are some general tips:

  • Make sure your child's backpack weighs no more than 5 to 10 percent of his or her body weight.

  • The backpack should never hang more than four inches below the waistline.

  • Urge your child to wear both shoulder straps, and wide, padded straps are very important.

  • The shoulder straps should be adjustable so the backpack can be fitted to your child's body.

Chiropractic Adjustments Help You Get Pregnant

A 23 year old female presented for chiropractic care to improve her overall health, in the hope that she may ultimately be able to have a child. At the time of the physical exam there was a six week history of numbness and tingling in her left foot, and within a month the temporary bouts of numbness included both of her legs and feet. The patient had her first natural menstrual cycle 3.5 months into care and discovered she was pregnant 4.5 months after initiation of chiropractic care. Ultrasound confirmed the pregnancy shortly after.

Chiropractic Adjustments Balance Immune System

A 7 year old who had suffered from chronic colds, allergies, and asthma since the age of 5 months. was able to discontinue medications after being adjusted for 2 weeks! Prior to beginning Chiropractic care, he repeatedly missed 1-2 days of school a month and saw his medical doctor monthly.

Within two weeks of initiating chiropractic care, the patient was able to discontinue his allergy and asthma medications (as decided upon by his parents) and the use of his nebulizer. In the first 5 months after beginning chiropractic care, he has had only checkups at the medical doctor. In the past school year, the patient has not missed any days of school due to illness.

This case report provides supporting evidence that chiropractic care can help balance immune system functioning and relieve asthma symptoms as well as colds and allergies.

Escaping the Ergonomic Danger Zone

More than 90 percent of all office workers use a personal computer, but whether they use it correctly is debatable. By "correctly," we're not referring to whether they know how to download files, format documents, troubleshoot error messages or prevent e-mail viruses from attacking. We're talking about having your computer monitor, keyboard, chair and workspace organized in a way that promotes productive, pain-free work and discourages repetitive-stress and ergonomic-related injuries.

Your Keyboard Height: When you are in a seated position and sitting up straight, the position of the keyboard should be at the height of your elbows or below. Most people will sit with a keyboard height approximately level with their abdomen. This forces the shoulders to remain in an elevated or shrugged position, which activates a large muscle in your back - the trapezius muscle - and can result in a great deal of pain if that position is held too long.

Raising the height of your chair is the easy fix for this problem. Other situations may require a more aggressive approach, such as installation of a swing arm that allows for adjustable positioning of the keyboard. Keep in mind that the computer mouse should be at the same appropriate height of the keyboard.

Your Monitor Height: The top of your monitor should be at the level of your eyebrows or top of your head. Some individuals have to place their monitor on a stack of large books to maintain the appropriate height. If you are having trouble seeing your monitor and maintaining a forward position of your head, it is likely that you will end up suffering the consequences of poor postural position.

Your Chair Height and Sitting Position: Attempt to maintain flat-footed placement on the floor to help with overall balance while sitting. Your objective is to maintain proper posture while sitting by allowing as much contact between your body and the chair. It is important to try to sit back in the chair as far as possible and to maintain contact with your shoulders against the back of the chair. The backs of your upper legs and your buttocks should completely contact the base of the chair.

It will also help a great deal if you learn to sit while holding in your lower abdomen for extended periods of time. This helps support the soft tissue of the lower back, which is actually under more strain in a seated position than when you are standing.

It may seem like an oversimplification, but learning to sit up straight, suck your stomach and keep your keyboard at the level of your elbows and below are easy ways to minimize your risk of chronic and repetitive-stress injuries at the workplace. That's good news to you and your employer.

 

Chiropractic Adjustments Cure IBS

Researchers in China report that spinal adjustments may cure irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). According to the report, "from 2004 to 2006, 82 patients with irritable bowel syndrome were treated with manipulation thoracolumbar vertebrae without any drug using. Among the patients, 24 patients were male and 58 patients were female, ranging in age from 15 to more than 61 years."

Following the treatment a whopping 91.5% ( 75 patients) were cured and the remaining patients all improved. The study's authors conclude that "unstable thoracolumbar vertebrae is the cause of irritable bowel syndrome." They add that spinal manipulation is a simple and effective way to treat this disorder by releases compression and stimulation affecting the nerves and blood vessels.

Chiropractic Adjustments Alleviate Dizziness and Balance Problems

A novel study looks at the effect of chiropractic care on balance and dizziness among seniors, and at the accuracy of common assessments of balance and dizziness.

The study tracked 14 patients, aged 65 years or older, who could not stand on one leg for more than 5 seconds. The participants received chiropractic care for 16 visits over an 8-week period.

"There was one mild and transient adverse effect, muscle soreness, which self-resolved. One patient was depressed, and his Geriatric Depression Scale score improved significantly during the study. Of the 6 patients with significant dizziness at baseline, 3 had scores of 0 (no dizziness) on the [Dizziness Handicap Inventory] at visit 16. Patients with dizziness tended to have greater chronic pain and show greater reductions in that pain than non dizzy patients. No clinically important effects on balance as measured by the [7-item Short-Form Berg Balance Scale] were apparent for the group as a whole, although 3 individual patients improved by 4 to 6 points."

Investigators concluded that "the Short-Form Berg Balance Scale (SF-BBS) did not show a great deal of clinical responsiveness in this study population. The outcome measures used for chronic pain (Pain Disability Index) and dizziness (DHI) appear to be appropriate for assessing patients in future larger studies for longer periods."

Unplug For Greater Productivity

In our fast pace, always 'plugged-in' environment, you need to 'unplug' in order to being more productive. Even if you can't unplug completely, there are easy ways to decrease the noise and get things done:

  • Schedule the times you check your email, and limit this to 2 to 3 times per workday.
  • Take a media fast; you already know the economy isn't doing well, how many articles do you really need to read about it?
  • turn off the music; it might be soothing, but music with lyrics tend to take our attention away from our work, and even the little distractions can kill productivity.
  • exercise the 2 call rule;  if someone calls twice consecutively, it's probably more important than a regular call.
  • Let all other calls go to voicemail;  if you are in a position where you can call people back at scheduled times, let them know this in your voicemail greeting and stick to that schedule.
  • turn off all notifications;  alarms, instant messages, email notifications, and any other notifications that will pop up and distract you from your work.
  • Schedule unplug times;  You may require the use of a computer for your job, but you could probably get away with unplugging the ethernet for a scheduled period of time (if all else fails, act like you don't know how it got unplugged).

Jonas Brothers Embrace Chiropractic Care to Stay Healthy

In a recent interview with The American Chiropractor magazine, Dr. Albert Wolyniec discussed the chiropractic care he provides to the Jonas Brothers and other stars including Demi Lovoto, star of Disney's Camp Rock and Sunny With A Chance.

"Our association with the Jonas family started when my son, Nicholas, went to preschool with Nicholas Jonas in 1998", says Dr. Wolyniec.

"Kevin Jonas Sr. was intrigued with chiropractic care and embraced the idea of using chiropractic care to stay healthy. He subsequently would bring his entire family to our office for wellness care, on a once per week basis, and they did this for many years."

"To this day chiropractic care is still a very high priority in their lives, despite their extremely demanding schedules. They make sure they get their spines adjusted regularly, even if they have to fly me somewhere in the country just for the day. I have even done a coast to coast house call solely to maintain their spines free of nerve interference. The Jonas Brothers give many concerts nationally, and when they are performing in this area, I go backstage with my portable table and set up an adjusting room. Everyone waits his/her turn and I generally adjust 15¬20 people each time. I adjust not only the Jonas Brothers, but their family, Kiyoko, Maya, their production staff, and the security people, including Big Rob, the bodyguard. I admire Kevin Sr. for the importance that he places on regular chiropractic care, and how he always works it into their schedules. I also frequently adjust them in their hotel when they are in New York City" reports Dr. Wolyniec.

He concludes by saying, "The Jonas Family has encouraged many others to receive chiropractic care, including Demi Lovato, star of the movie Camp Rock. I am frequently asked if the boys have changed with all their fame and fortune. It is absolutely amazing to me that they have not. They are still the same polite, obedient, humble boys who seem to have their attention on others rather than themselves. When I adjust them, they will often ask me how Mrs. Wolyniec and my children are doing, and I can tell they are truly interested in my answers. I believe, if they haven't changed by now, they never will. They are firmly grounded in their faith and are staying true to their vision."
