Back pain after delivery related to weak abdominal muscles

Strengthening abdominal musculature is key in addressing back pain in postpartum women, according to a new report.

"The purpose of the current study was to test the influence of specific trunk muscle training on pain, activity limitation and kinesiophobia in 10 subjects with back pain post-partum," write the study's authors. "The treatment consisted of specific deep muscle training of the transversus abdominus and multifidus muscles."

"Individual specific deep muscle training of the transversus abdominus and multifidus muscles reduced pain and activity limitation in women with back pain post-partum," conclude the study's authors. "Further research is needed to determine more precisely how kinesiophobia affects women with back pain post-partum."

An apple a day keeps your kids asthma away - eating apples during pregnancy cuts kids' asthma risk

Children born to women who ate apples during pregnancy have a significant decreased risk of asthma and wheezing.

These findings are from a study that tracked dietary intake by 1,253 mother-child pairs for five years. According to the researchers who conducted medical evaluations for asthma and related symptoms (i.e., wheezing) in the children, they found no other association with decreased risk other than for apple consumption. The only other positive association found between prenatal food intake and risk reduction in the children was with fish intake.

Families who eat together typically eat healthier

Teenagers whose families dine together are more likely to have healthy eating habits in adulthood, compared with teens who do not participate in family meals, say investigators. Investigators tracked 946 female teens and 764 male teens for five years. At follow-up, those who had regularly engaged in family meals were eating more fruit, vegetables, dark-green and orange vegetables and key nutrients and lower intakes of soft drinks. Frequency of family meals also predicted more breakfast meals in females and for both sexes predicted more frequent dinner meals, higher priority for meal structure, and higher priority for social eating. "Family meals during adolescence may have a lasting positive influence on dietary quality and meal patterns in young adulthood."

So if families who eat together typically eat healthier, eat a Mediterranean diet for even greater health

 A traditional Mediterranean diet — rich in produce, fish and olive oil — may quell the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). These findings were newly published in the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases.

 As part of the experiment, investigators divided 130 women with RA into two cohorts. One took classes on Mediterranean food preparation. The control group was provided written dietary instruction.  Subjects were followed for six months. Those attending the cooking classes not only increased their intake of antioxidant-rich foods, but they also reported significantly reduced pain and stiffness, compared with members of the control group.
